Artist's Description
St. Mary’s Church built in 1247 AD, is a part of “Matosavank” a 13th century small Armenian monastery, hidden in a forested area of Dilijan National Park, in Armenia. The church is currently in ruin and is relatively difficult to find since trail markers tend to be misleading.
It was constructed from roughly hewn stones, many of which are “Cross Stones” (Khachkar, in Armenian), within the interior of the building.
The origin of the Armenian Cross Stones dates back to the 9th century, with the oldest dated cross stone dating to 879 AD, during the time of Armenian revival, after its liberation from Arab rule. The cross stones, throughout their history, were used in churches, monasteries, and many ordinary buildings, to symbolize its Christian belief, Armenia’s National Religion. To this day the tradition remains and you will find Cross Stone carvers, throughout the country.
About Bearj B Photo Art
I have had a camera in my hand ever since I can remember, at first, trying to capture the moment with simple snapshots. Gradually those snapshots started becoming more sophisticated and my work was no longer a picture a person, or group in front of a giant building where you had to look closely to identify the people in the picture. As time passed, my love grew stronger. I wanted to create, as opposed to just taking a picture. However, the response from family and friends was, Why would you take a picture of that. Although I did not realize it at the time, I guess I was on the right track. The less they understood, the more I liked what I did and subsequently became bored traveling with others and preferring to travel and go out...
