Description
Smbat Fortress (Smbataberd) probably existed before the 5th century and was used as a power base for the Vasakian Dynasty, then reinforced during the reign of the Orbelian Dynasty. Its original name is not known. People call it Smbataberd, perhaps because the nearby village has the grave of Smbat Orbelian. It is more likely, though, that the castle was named for the 10th century Armenian Prince, Smbat.
Throughout history, Armenia built a number of fortified complexes (including monasteries), due to its geographical location and the fact that it was the only Christian Nation in the region, thus having to protect itself from the Byzantines, the Persians, the Ottomans and finally the Soviets.
Today, Smbat Fortress is a hikers paradise, rising approximately 6,700 feet above sea level. You won't find much about this place in a tourist guide, but, for the adventuresome, it should definitely not be missed.
