The beginnings of “Noravank”, or “New Monastery”, dates back to around 1,200 AD. The monastery is located in southern Armenia, in a narrow gorge known for its tall, sheer brick-red cliffs, directly behind the monastery. The monastery remains an example of the ornate architecture of the time.
The monastery survived the Mongol invasion of Armenia around 1,240 AD and remained under Mongol influence until around 1,335 AD.
