Description
The beginnings of “Noravank”, or “New Monastery”, dates back to around 1,200 AD. The monastery is located in southern Armenia, in a narrow gorge known for its tall, sheer brick-red cliffs, directly behind the monastery. The monastery remains an example of the ornate architecture of the time.
The monastery survived the Mongol invasion of Armenia around 1,240 AD and remained under Mongol influence until around 1,335 AD. There are varying stories as to why the Mongols did not destroy the monastery, but it not only survived their invasion, but it became a cultural and university center during that time. Over the centuries, it has also survived several earthquakes as well.
Noravank was included as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. It is definitely a place to see.
