Description
The “Mermaid’s Hair” is a cascade type waterfall located on the Arpa River running through the town of Jermuk in Armenia.
It is not a very high waterfall, but as legend has it, a nobleman and his, extraordinarily beautiful daughter lived in a castle along the river. Men from all over the world wanted to marry her, but she refused them all. She was in love with a young poor shepherd who would visit every day, after mid-night. From her bedroom window, she would throw a rope and he would climb up to her every night.
When her father found out, he was beside himself, and he cursed his daughter, telling her that if she met him again, she would turn into a mermaid and never come out of the water again. But the lovers did meet again and when she threw her lover the rope, she turned into a mermaid and her long flowing hair became the waterfalls which came to be known as the “Mermaid’s Hair”.
