Description
The Ahmad ibn Tulun mosque, a huge brick building complex, was commissioned by Ahmad ibn Tulun, who was the governor of Egypt at the time, in 876 AD and is the largest mosque in Cairo.
The mosque, which has three outside courtyards, has been restored several times, throughout its history. Once in 1077, then in 1296, when they added several improvements and most recently in 2004 by the Egyptian Supreme Council of Antiquities.
On the lighter side, parts of several movies were filmed in the mosque, including: “The Spy Who Loved Me” and “Tomb Raider; The Last Revelation.”
